Stock Up

It’s time to build up a Remington 700 so here we go, Rifle, Check, Trigger, Timney, Check, Scope, Nightforce, Check Stock...

What on earth, There are 200 available which one is best Well, since I spent all my money on the Nightforce and the wife is giving me everlasting hell for spending that kind of money, I need to go a little cheaper. But I don’t want to sacrifice quality. Now I could go with a McMillian but that would take 3-4 months, Oh look here, There’s a gunstock that is less than $300, good quality and available today. Yes, there is, In my daily adventures in the shop I see all kinds of stuff come across my workbench. I had a customer come to me wanting to try the New Magpul Hunter 700 stock. At that time, they had not been released by Magpul. I did some research on the stock and told him I would look to order one for him as soon as they were available. During my research, I had decided that I wanted to try one for my own Remington 700. So I ordered 2 when they were released. I also ordered the bottom metal/ Plastic and several Magazines. My entire purchase for myself was right at $350.

The stock showed up fairly quickly and I instantly started checking it out. It was just as advertised. The polymer of the stock is solid molding, It has a full-length bedding block with a tang going into the grip. The angle of the grip when in a shooting position is very comfortable. With a full length of pull, adjustment included in the packaging. You can also adjust the comb as needed, However, the various size adjustments are extra’s that you need to purchase from Magpul. I found the one included to be perfectly set for me. The forend has M-lock grooves cut for accessories to be placed and there are 3 sling studs included that you need to install. The bottom metal was a separate purchase however it does come with one 5 round

magazine. The cost direct from Magpul was $69.95. I found the Magazine release to be easy to operate and though it is completely polymer, it is very sturdy. The magazines are the same quality we have come to know out of Magpul. They are also fairly inexpensive at $35 if you compare that to Surgeon Mags which I can’t even find a price for replacements. However, the bottom metal with 1 magazine is $369 at Brownells. When I went to install my Remington action into the stock, I found that the fit was solid with no adjustment needed. There is room forward of the recoil lug and the action seats solid without the bottom installed. When I installed the bottom metal, there was also no adjustment needed, however, the unit has a protective ring inside that you must remove if you are using the magazines instead of your original bottom plate. You can choose to use your original internal magazine if you want. I then torqued the actions screws into place. I found that this was easily done and there was no slop between the action and the floor plate. The barrel channel is fully free floated and has enough room for a bull barrel or a standard Remington barrel. I installed my optic and bore sighted the gun. Upon taking the rifle out to the range I did find it a little heavy and the overall size of the stock is rather big. If you are using it for hunting you may find it too heavy. However for long range shooting it’s as good as some of the stock systems that are out there. The first few shots I fired out of the gun held at just under 1 moa without tuning the ammunition at 200 yards. If you are looking for a quality, Tactical stock for your Remington 700 short action I can say comfortably for under $350 total cost. The Magpul Hunter 700 stock system is a good product and will serve you well and adjust to your needs. There are a couple of negatives about this stock system that you should be aware of. As good as I have found them. They are only available in the right-handed version and short action only. However, I was told at Shot Show that Magpul is working on other options for the Hunter 700 system so they may have other options out sometime in the future.
