Boyd's Gunstocks
There are a lot of people out there that say “ you get what you pay for, buy something cheap and that’s what you get”. This is one case I beg to differ. I have worked with stocks from big names in the industry with a cost equal to the size of the name. They are always excellent stocks and work well with the guns they are built for. This time, I got a surprise.
I had a customer bring me his beat up, worn out Mauser 98 to be rebarreled. This gun was just tired and the barrel was shot out. He wanted a .270 so I ordered the barrel for it. When the barrel arrived and was properly fit to the gun, headspaced, etc… I looked at the old worn out stock. It was my suggestion that we look into something that would better suit his needs. Since he spent some serious money on the barrel, I was looking for something that was a little less expensive. At SHOT Show, I had the chance to talk to the guys at Boyds. The product looked good and was within his budget. So I ordered one. When the stock arrived (very quickly) I pulled it out. I laid the rifle into the stock and it fit perfectly. The customer had asked me to bed the stock so I knew I had a little work to do but not much. Even with the large barrel, The bedding process was minor. I had specified with Boyds that I was using a varmint barrel and they cut it out so it was free floated all the way. I had to do a little material removal around the chamber area but all in all it was a perfect fit. The cost was just over $120 with shipping. The amazing part of the stock was the finish they put on it at the factory. I literally had to do very little to it. The pad was factory and was well blended and the recessing for the bolt handle was partially done. I will definitely use their stocks again as I was very impressed with the way it fit and the excellent look and finish of the stock.
